  1. Complete a phlebotomy training program with classroom instruction and supervised venipunctures.
  2. Pass a national certification exam. Most employers ask for one even where the state doesn’t.
  3. In CA, LA, NV or WA, apply for the state certificate or license as well.
  4. Keep certification current with continuing education.

Most states do not require a license; California, Louisiana, Nevada and Washington do require state certification or licensure. Common national certifications include NHA’s CPT, ASCP’s PBT, AMT’s RPT and NCCT’s NCPT.
