- Complete a state-approved nurse aide training program (federal minimum: 75 hours, 16 of them supervised clinical practice).
- Pass your state’s competency evaluation: a written or oral exam plus a skills demonstration.
- Get listed on your state nurse aide registry, which employers check before hiring.
- Keep your certification active. Under federal rules, if you go 24 consecutive months without paid nursing-related work you must retrain or retest.
